Editorial Paper Art Showcase

When it comes to paper art, it’s the little things that make all the difference; the intricate patterns, the tiny, talented cuts and the specific colours chosen for each inch. Estonian designer Eiko Ojala is an unfathomable talent when it comes to the method, as these recent editorial pieces show.

Adhering to almost any brief, Ojala’s style is as iconic as it is impressive. Using simple colour palettes, stylish silhouettes and gorgeous, intricate patterns, this series would certainly stop you in your tracks when turning the pages of your favourite magazines.

Working with portraits, typography and landscapes, Ojala is a true talent in the paper art industry. With a style as recognisable as his, you’ll no doubt be seeing more of his work in the coming months.

3D Ice Cubes

Novelty-shaped ice cubes are nothing new, but it’s safe to say that you’ve never seen them as impressive as this before. 3D on the Rocks is the latest ad campaign for Japanese liquor company Suntory, a brand who specializes in whiskey. They collaborated with advertising agency TBWA\Hakuhodo to create the world’s first 3D-milled ice cubes. The tiny, intricate sculptures are cool, this time both literally and figuratively.

Each creation is the result of a time-consuming modeling process completed by a precision drill that carves the minute details into ice. Their beauty is fleeting, unfortunately, because after all of the careful work they were placed in a glass for immediate enjoyment.

Some of the campaign’s designs included a great white shark, an astronaut, the Statue of Liberty, and Michaelango’s David. Ideas were submitted by the public, and a few lucky participants had their work produced. The winners were invited to a secret bar in Tokyo where they partook of Suntory whiskey with some very special “rocks.”

Impressive Textile Art By Mr. Finch

Self-taught artist Mr. Finch creates animals and other objects that seem to stem from Alice’s Wonderland. Inspired by the rolling hills and mossy woods near his home in Yorkshire, Finch forms flowers, insects and birds that fascinate him with their amazing life cycles and extraordinary nests and behavior.

He then goes hunting for vintage textiles – velvet curtains from an old hotel, a threadbare wedding dress or a vintage apron – and transforms them into all sorts of beasts and toadstools. According to Mr. Finch, his figures are “storytelling creatures for people who are also a little lost, found and forgotten”.

Illustrations Based on Basketball Player’s Beard

Superstar basketball player James Harden has been illustrated through various mediums and styles. It’s the beard that makes it!

The illustrations come in a variety of beautiful styles

Designers constantly start personal projects to better their skills. From character design to illustration work, it’s a great idea to brush up on your qualifications. Here, Croatian designer Filip Peraić has illustrated basketball player James Harden in a variety of beautiful ways.

“I started this project to avoid enslaving an expression to one style/concept,” explains Peraić. “James Harden’s profile was chosen because of the belief that this ‘constraint’ will produce more creative approaches and produce out-of-the-box solutions. Some results will be led by more stylistic/aesthetic idea, some more conceptual or metaphorical – it’s all about developing my skills.”

Already working with major brands of the world, including IBM, Mercedes Benz, WIRED, Fly Emirates, and ESPN, it seems that Peraić already has plenty of skills to offer. We can’t complain though – this illustrative series is wonderful.James Harden illustration

A Colorful Desktop Stationery Set

Designer Samuel Wilkinson teamed up with French design brand Lexon to create a desktop stationery set called Babylon. The six-piece set was inspired by images of rock strata, like The Wave of Coyote Buttes in Arizona, with its parallel layers that split and sweep around the mounds causing the beautiful linear effect. Each of the pieces comes with a geometric, faceted-like exterior that feels great in the hand.

Check out the entire line in the video:

The set consists of an Alarm Clock, Stapler, Tape Dispenser, Pen, Scissors, and Pen Cup, that each come in your choice of two colors, a dark gray or a bold color. They’re made from thick injection moulded ABS plastic with a soft touch matte finish.
